My fascination rests in unanswerable questions about humanity and the inner workings of the conscious mind. My works are manifested through social investigations of certain subcultures through a highly personal perspective, as well as self-exploration in foreign environments. The resulting documentation conveys an obviously slanted objectivity on reality, and one that is ultimately a visual discussion of human consciousness. The camera serves as the ultimate metaphor.
The ongoing themes in my works of "perspective" and "identity" are also foundational themes of our very existence, and the basis of my creative process. What remains is an evaluation of the many ways humans relate to the world around them, and within themselves.
"The Sacred", completed in 2005, is a look into the underground spirit worship that existed in New Orleans. The practitioners were photographed specifically during fleeting moments of divine intervention with the spirit world. I attended rituals in Voodoo temples and Spiritual worship centers for a year and half, observing the belief system, the surrender to the supernatural, and the experience of possession. I photographically approached these rituals with an attempt to capture the moment of clarity, the complete circumvention of logical thought, and the unquestioned faith in the supernatural. The resulting work is elusive and non-descript. Yet the images communicate the experience of faith in practice through mood and feeling, as opposed to formal visual description.
